From Breakouts to Bacteria: Why You Should Clean Your Makeup Brushes Regularly

Taking care of your makeup brushes is just as important as the makeup itself. Not only does regular cleaning keep your brushes looking and performing their best, but it also helps to prevent breakouts and skin irritation. But how do you clean your brushes, and how often should you replace them?

What Happens If You Don't Clean Your Brushes?

When you use a brush to apply makeup, it can pick up all sorts of dirt, oil, and bacteria from your skin. Over time, this buildup can lead to breakouts, skin irritation, and even infections. Plus, if your brushes are caked with old makeup, they're not going to work as well - you'll get uneven coverage, streaks, and clumps.

How Often Should You Clean Your Brushes?

Ideally, you should clean them after every use to prevent buildup of makeup, oil, and bacteria. However, we all know that life can get in the way, so aim to clean them at least once a week.

Michelle Phan, makeup artist and YouTube personality

If you use your brushes every day or apply heavier makeup, you may need to clean them more often.

What Should You Use to Clean Your Brushes?

When it comes to cleaning your brushes, you'll want to use a gentle, soap-free cleanser that won't damage the bristles. There are plenty of brush cleaners on the market, but you can also use a mild shampoo or a gentle facial cleanser. Make sure to avoid using hot water or harsh chemicals, as these can cause the bristles to become brittle or even fall out.

How To Wash Your Brushes?

So, how do you actually clean your brushes? It's easier than you might think! Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Wet the bristles with warm water - make sure not to get water on the metal or wood parts of the brush, as this can cause damage.

  2. Apply a small amount of gentle shampoo or brush cleaner to the bristles and rub it into the bristles with your fingers.

  3. Rinse the bristles thoroughly under running water, gently squeezing out any excess water.

  4. Gently reshape the bristles with your fingers and lay the brush flat on a towel to dry.

Note: It's important not to let the brushes dry standing up, as this can cause water to seep down into the ferrule (the metal part that holds the bristles) and loosen the glue that holds the bristles in place.

When Should You Replace Your Brushes?

Even with proper cleaning, your brushes will eventually start to wear out. You should replace your brushes every 6 to 12 months, depending on how often you use them and how well you take care of them. Look for signs like shedding bristles, splayed bristles, or a misshapen brush head. Investing in high-quality brushes can also help to extend their lifespan. At Goodiebox we work with high quality brands such as Niré, L'oreal and Mesauda cosmetics.
